Today, as I write this, is 34 years since the day Gary and I had our wedding at Grace Lutheran Church in LaGrange. So, that would make this our anniversary. (One of them, at least. That qualifier is for those of 
you who know us.)
Gary woke up today with a horrid headache and has spent most of the day in bed. He keeps apologizing every time I check on him. I keep telling him that he has nothing to apologize for. Sickness happens. Heavens know he has had to deal with many of my bad days over the years. And as much as we would like to argue the fact, we can’t really control what we catch or what we come down with. Yes, there are certain behaviors that will make us tend to be healthy, but none of those are guarantees that life will be uneventful.
That is the nature of life.
Perhaps that is why the Bible tells us to number our days. The words actually come from the one Psalm that Moses wrote. Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. (Psalm 90:12)
I am not an expert on marriage by any stretch of the imagination. It is just a state I have enjoyed for a fairly long time. Since I was young when I married, I have spent much more of my life married than unmarried. And I am glad for that.
Moses was married and I think he thought of Zipporah quite a bit as he wrote the Psalm. Yes, it was focused on the Lord, but the verses kept cycling back to the brevity of time on earth. Since I am a fading flower, here today and gone tomorrow, I am glad that another plant of equal brevity walks alongside me. Today, I can help him and be there for him as he mends. Tomorrow, he could return the favor. It is that give and take that makes each day with him special.
Moses also says in that Psalm, Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days. (verse 14) As often as not, it is the life companion that God has provided me that helps me see the joy in each day. It is his hand in mine that brings gladness to my heart and reminds me that our Heavenly Father loves to give good gifts to His children.
So today, on our anniversary, I will rejoice and be glad in the husband God gave me. We may not be able to celebrate today together as planned, but I can celebrate that he is my husband and that we still share this wonderful gift of life together.
