The Messiah Anna Longed For

Out of the Mouths of Babes

Psalm 8:2 Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants
You have ordained strength,
Because of Your enemies,
That You may silence the enemy and the avenger.

During his life, Jesus called the little children to him. He told those that would push the little ones aside that they had a better grasp of the kingdom of heaven and what faith meant than any of the adults.

Living in the women’s portion of the temple, Anna saw countless infants and children. The parents came to dedicate them to the Lord because of the Law. But I wonder how often Anna saw glistening faith in the eyes of the young ones and only dry duty in the countenance of their parents.

Scripture tells us that even the unborn John the Baptist recognized Jesus. How many other children saw him at the temple when Mary and Joseph brought him for his dedication? Did other babies suddenly coo and become cheerful in his presence? Did their older brothers and sisters long to hold him and not know why?

Throughout his time on earth, children seemed to know there was something good, something different, something special about Jesus.

Perhaps Anna knew in her spirit and through prophecy that the infant in front of her was her Messiah. But the way the babies reacted would have confirmed it!
